Dr. Kevin Kephart

Kevin Kephart is a Professor of Plant Science at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. He has served there for over 30 years and recently completed his term as the Vice President for Research and Economic Development. He began his career at South Dakota State University in 1986 as Assistant Professor of Plant Science and conducted research on forages and biofuels crops. Kephart holds a Ph.D. degree in crop production and physiology from Iowa State University, an M.S. degree in agronomy from the University of Wyoming, and a B.S. degree in agricultural sciences from Montana State University. Kephart was the Director of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station from 1998 to 2005. He has extensive experience in leading research programs, fostering public-private collaborations, commercializing new discoveries, and promoting state and regional economic development. Kephart has been active in developing research collaborations with the U.S. military, such as the Navy’s Great Green Fleet Initiative that will deploy domestic advanced biofuels for diesel and jet-fuel applications. He is currently the President of the South Dakota Biotechnology Association.
