Derek Markoff
Director of MBET Carbon Exchange
Derek Markolf earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Soil Science from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1999. Since then his mastery of environmental sciences has helped him thrive in the fields of biology, local air quality, and global climate change. Derek was one of the first verifiers under the California Climate Action Registry (CCAR) voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting program. As a consultant for many of the largest GHG emissions reporters in California, Derek helped solve some of the most challenging policy issues faced by CCAR at the outset of their GHG reporting program. These experiences lead to Derek being recruited by CCAR to the position of Senior Policy Manager in 2007. Derek was at CCAR during its transition to the Climate Action Reserve (CAR), which has come to be regarded as the gold standard for voluntary GHG emissions offsets in North America. Through this transition, Derek was instrumental in developing many of CARs business policies and procedures. His primary responsibilities were managing multi-stakeholder workgroups, authoring GHG emissions reduction accounting standards, and managing the public process including chairing public workshops and incorporating stakeholder feedback into the final protocols adopted by the CAR board of directors. While at CCAR and CAR Derek played a leading role in liaising with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) as they developed their mandatory GHG emissions reporting regulations under California’s AB 32. In this role, Derek represented CCAR and CAR on the dais during CARB public workshops in Sacramento and consulted with CARB on experience learned through years of implementing the CCAR and CAR programs. In 2009, Derek returned to consulting by joining Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) where he is currently the Technical Manager for LRQA’s climate change and sustainability services in the Americas. He is responsible for liaising with LRQA climate change managers around the world, regulatory and voluntary GHG emissions reporting programs throughout the Americas, and LRQA’s accreditation bodies to ensure LRQA policies and procedure for delivering services (verification and consulting) are of the highest quality.
